Overview

STAEG is a growing charitable group of independent schools committed to educational excellence. Today, the Group consists of Stormont School in Potters Bar, St Albans High School for Girls (STAHS) Senior in St Albans, St Albans High School for Girls (STAHS) Prep in Wheathampstead and St George’s Ascot. Formed in 2024, STAEG is in a phase of rapid growth and development, with imminent plans for bringing new schools into the group.

The role & key responsibilities

The Head of Governance is responsible for maintaining high standards of governance, compliance and regulatory practice across STAEG and its schools. The role provides both strategic and operational leadership, supporting the Board of Trustees, committees and School Governing Boards to operate effectively, transparently and in line with legal and sector best practice.

Acting as the principal advisor on governance matters, the Head of Governance will help ensure the Group’s governance framework supports STAEG’s ambition to become a sector-leading charitable schools group. Reporting to the Chair of Trustees, the role works closely with the Principal and COO on day-to-day matters.

The role is primarily based at STAEG Headquarters in St Albans, with regular travel to schools across the Group and flexibility for hybrid working.

This is a permanent, full-time position. Candidates seeking part-time positions will also be considered.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead governance support for the Board of Trustees, committees and School Governing Boards across the Group.
  • Provide expert advice on governance, compliance and regulatory best practice.
  • Oversee effective governance processes, including meetings, policies, statutory filings and governance documentation.
  • Lead trustee and governor recruitment, induction, training and development, including board effectiveness reviews.
  • Support major strategic initiatives, risk management and organisational change across STAEG.

Experience & qualifications

  • Significant experience supporting governance at board or trustee level.
  • Strong knowledge of charity governance and company law.
  • Qualified Company Secretary or studying for a qualification with The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland (CGI) (desirable).
  • Experience within independent schools, multi-academy trusts, or charitable education organisations (desirable).

  • Exceptional attention to detail, sound judgement and highly organised.
  • Calm and authoritative adviser with the ability to build effective relationships with senior leaders, trustees and governors.
  • Commitment to the values and mission of STAEG.
